On the ninth day of Christmas

On the ninth day of Christmas we went to the zoo.

It had been years since I went to a zoo – perhaps as much as 25 years or so. I was so excited!

Since coming to Auckland last week, I’ve found the weather not entirely unlike a Brisbane winter. Not cold but just a chill in the air. It was welcome after the Brisbane summer days we had before we left. It also seems we escaped the worst of the blistering temperatures sweeping across South East Queensland at the moment. So I am not complaining about the cold at all.

Nevertheless, today Auckland turned up the thermostat and gave us a solid summer’s day. The day we decided to wander around outdoors. I am now sporting a red glow that I could’ve done without.

Oh well.

Many of the zoo enclosures appeared empty as the smart animals inside (compared to us less intelligent one walking around) had decided to shelter from the harsh sun and were nowhere to be seen. No lions. No elephants. No cheetahs. No baboons. No otters. Almost no hippo (only the tip of his nose was visible above the waterline). And many more. Yet, those we did see were worth the visit.

Despite the sunburn and the tired legs, I had a wonderful day.
